When all the leaves fall from the trees and the weather turns cold, you are not the only one that wants to spend more time indoors. Rodents, bugs, and other pests also want to find a nice warm place to wait out the winter months. As Baltimore’s go-to pest and rodent control experts, we would like to share with you some pest-proofing tips to implement this fall.
Locate Pest Entrances
To catch a pest, you have to think like a pest. Well, this isn’t entirely true, but it couldn’t hurt. Inspect your home’s exterior looking for potential entry points — attic vents, openings, gaps in siding, holes near utilities and pipes, etc. Be sure to note any entry point that you spot.
Seal Off Vulnerable Areas
After noting all possible points of entry, now it is time to close off these areas. Most cracks, crevices, and gaps can be sealed using caulking and steel wool. Additionally, any weather-stripping that is loose or missing around windows and foundation should be replaced.
Clean & Dry
Basements, attics, and crawl spaces are notorious for housing insect and rodents. They are often drawn to these places because they provide the warmth, moisture, and shelter they need to survive. By cleaning these spaces and drying them out, you can make these spaces less inviting. One particular trick is adding a dehumidifier to your basement. Additionally, keep mulch and soil away from your home’s foundation and keep all bushes and shrubs trimmed back.
Keep Wood Piles At A Distance
It doesn’t matter whether it’s brush or firewood, piles of wood are ideal habitats for a number of critters. Because of this, it is important to keep all piles far away from your house. Most pest control experts suggest keeping wood stacks at least 20 feet away from your home.
Maintain Drainage System
Pooling moisture and debris build-ups make great homes for insects and rodents. If you have yet to clean your gutters, the fall is the perfect time to do so. A well-maintained drainage system will help direct water away from your home and to an appropriate drain. Additionally, if any of your underground drains are clogged be sure to clean these up as well.
Check Decorations
With Halloween and Christmas swiftly approaching, now is the time when many people are dragging out old decorations and adorning their homes. When you do this, it’s best to check all decorations for pests that may have been hiding out in the boxes and crates.
